Safety Tools

Introduction

We want young people to have a positive experience on Yubo and that includes being as safe as possible.

That’s why we provide a number of safety features in the app, including community guidelines, technical tools and human moderators who keep a close eye on things.

Our five-step approach puts user safety at the heart of the Yubo app and we’re always looking for ways to improving it even more.

Step 1: Sign-up

Yubo users must be aged 13 and above, provide their real identity and mobile number and have parental permission.

We’ve embedded safety from the moment someone signs up to Yubo. When an under-18 registers for the app, they have to do the following:

  • Provide their real date of birth. It’s really important that young people are honest about their age when creating a profile as, like many other social networks, we can’t currently verify how old they are at sign-up. However, if we identify Yubo profiles that could be underage or they are reported to us by other users, we investigate and have the option to remove them.
  • Have parental permission to set up a Yubo profile. Again, young people should be honest about their parents or carers knowing they are registering for the app.
  • Provide their real name, gender, location and a real photo that shows their face (no cartoons or photos of cats!). Yubo users can also include some of their favourite emojis and other photos or videos in the profile.
  • Give us their real mobile number so that we can verify it and send them a confirmation code. Users’ mobile numbers are not published on their Yubo profile.

Yubo uses location data from users’ mobile phones so their location (current city) will show on their profile. If someone doesn’t want their location to be visible to others, they need to switch off location data in their phone’s settings or hide their city in the Profile Settings on Yubo. If they do this, only their country will be visible in their profile.

We send a link to our community guidelines to all new Yubo users when they sign up to the app.

Step 2: Profile settings

Users can change their profile settings on Yubo by clicking on the gear icon at the top right of their profile and selecting their preferences. They can choose to:

  • Talk to either ‘Boys’, ‘Girls’ or ‘Boys & Girls’.
  • ‘Hide my city’ to keep their location private.
  • Not allow friends to be able to use their mobile number to find them on the app.
  • Adjust the distance settings on their profile to meet friends within a certain radius, either staying local or going global.
